While the reasons for changing careers vary from person to person and while some people start thinking of a career change, that’s all they do, think about it, because their beliefs keep them locked into that particular “career.” According to Kathy Caprino, Forbes Contributor, the one belief that cripples us into thinking that we can’t make that career change is thinking that we don’t have what it takes to do what we want.

Caprino suggests that this one belief “stands out among all the rest, as the most limiting, damaging and constraining — and contributes most to career inertia and unhappiness.” That belief is the #1 hurdle to overcome because if you are really seeking after changing your career, then this kind of thinking will in fact keep you from possible career change and fulfillment.

Therefore, changing your mindset, as suggested by Caprino, is the first step to spurring on new movement and shifting your “career.” Caprino advises that we stop thinking that it is the “outer (or inner) things that will make or break” our success, and understand that we already have what it takes to succeed on the inside of us.

This makes absolute sense. When I think about it, and without even knowing, these are the four characteristics that propelled me to take that step toward changing my career.

Finding the right opportunity

While, I can’t remember the exact time I started thinking career change, I knew that I definitely could not see myself doing my current job for the rest of my life. So many times I felt like I was putting so much work and effort into my job but the returns were no where to be seen. It’s like the law of diminishing returns, the more you put in the less you get out and that in itself is very disheartening, to say the least. When you get to that point, you just do what you have to do and no more. Don’t you agree?

One thing I always knew, was that at some point in my life, I wanted to have my own business, as I like the idea of being self-employed. That being the case, ever so often I would look in the classifieds to see the listings for businesses that were up for sale. Or look at spaces for rent that would be ideal for a business. But there weren’t any that I was particularly interested in.

This business had to be something that I liked and something that I would enjoy doing. I even looked online for opportunities but the data entry thing was not for me. Writing and proofreading jobs, were also options that I looked at. But I wanted to be certified before I got into editing and proofreading, which I’ll be doing soon enough.

Thinking outside the Box
